Townsend's Old Trafford target

13 March 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Andros Townsend has set his sights on beating Manchester United to keep ourselves in the mix at the top end of the table.

We head to Old Trafford sitting sixth in the Premier League standings, one point behind fifth-placed Liverpool and three behind the Red Devils in fourth.

For winger Andros, it’s important to pick up the points on Sunday – thus ensuring United don’t put further distance between them and us in the run-in to the end of the season.

“Since the cup final we’ve put on two good performances, we’ve got six points and I think now it’s really important to beat the teams that are around us,” said the 23-year-old.

“We’ve got Manchester United on Sunday and it’s a good chance for us to show everyone that we are capable of beating the biggest teams in the league.

“Of course, Old Trafford is one of the hardest places to go to and win but I think we’ve got the confidence, having gone there for the last two years and got great results, to get the three points again.”

A starter in our wins against Swansea City and Queens Park Rangers last week, Andros was also in the side when we met United at White Hart Lane just after Christmas.

Although there was no score on that occasion, the England international reckons we’re more than capable of hitting the back of the net against Louis van Gaal’s men this weekend.

“When we played United at home it was an extremely difficult game, it ended 0-0 but we’re going up to win the match,” he added.

“We’re focused on our own game but any Manchester United side that their manager puts out is going to be a top quality side and we’ve seen over recent weeks they’ve been picking up wins, putting results together and going on a run in the league, so it’s up to us to stop them.

“We’ll look to play good attacking football and hopefully we’ll be good enough to win the game at the end of the day.”
