Tour 2016 - football meets football in Melbourne

27 July 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Erik Lamela, Kieran Trippier, Luke McGee and Tom Glover joined Ledley King on a visit to the home of the giants of Aussie Rules Football today (Wednesday, July 27).

Hawthorn FC are in line to win a record fourth straight AFL title and welcomed our lads to their Ricoh Centre training base in Mulgrave for a crash course in one of the world’s toughest sports.

One Hawthorn player was particularly excited by the visit – Sam Mitchell, who has just made his 300th appearance for The Hawks, is a Spurs fan and met Mauricio Pochettino on Monday night before attending Tuesday’s clash with Juventus.

He and team-mates James Frawley, Liam Shiels, Matt Spangher and Paul Puopolo gave our lads some kicking practice before presenting them with personalised Hawthorn jerseys.

The Hawthorn players earned Spurs jerseys in exchange ahead of their vital clash with Carlton FC, taking place in Tasmania on Sunday.

Aussie Rules is Melbourne’s biggest sport, with 10 of the 18 teams in the AFL originating from the city, and Ledley has been brushing up on his knowledge.

The former skipper said: “When I came out here in April I got to watch my first ever AFL game as Hawthorn beat the Adelaide Crows at the MCG so I’ve been looking forward to meeting some of the guys in person since.

“They are great athletes and clearly a successful team so it was great for them to invite our lads down to their training base today for a kick around.

“Sam definitely knows his stuff when it comes to Spurs as well and I think he is flying the flag well for us out here in Melbourne – I’ll have to do the same for The Hawks when I get back to London!”
