Tour 2016 - Flat whites and Lilywhites!

24 July 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Melbourne is famous for its coffee and is home to some of the world’s top baristas.

As part of our visit and continued efforts to engage with the local community, four of the lads today visited one of the city’s original and most popular coffee houses.

Nacer Chadli, Ryan Mason, Michel Vorm and DeAndre Yedlin surprised customers when they showed up at St. Ali on Yarra Place in South Melbourne.

St. Ali has been nationally and internationally recognised for the quality of its coffee and locally for its food. It was awarded ‘Best Food Cafe’ in Melbourne in 2013 by The Age Good Cafe Guide.

Its Head of Coffee, Matt Perger, won first place at the 2012 World Brewers Cup and has won two Australasian Specialty Coffee Association (AASCA) Detpak Australian Barista Championship titles. He also placed second in the 2013 World Barista Championship.

Matt gave the lads a crash course in barista training under the watchful eye of owner Salvatore Malatesta before each player had a go at making the perfect flat white.

According to the expert judges, it was Nacer who came out on top in front of a live audience on our official Facebook page.

Nacer said: “I’m proud to have won but more importantly it was good to get out of the hotel and into the local community to see what Melbourne is all about. We are being made to feel very welcome here.”

Ryan added: “When we come on tour it’s a big thing for the Club to do more than just train and play football matches – we like to get out and about, meet the fans and have a bit of fun like we did today.”

Michel said: “We heard about how good the coffee is here in Melbourne and I think we came to the right place today. St. Ali had a good vibe and was packed full of people so it was great to visit and be taught a lesson by the best in the business.”

DeAndre added: “It was a lot of fun. My coffee-making skills were definitely not the best but it was good to do something a bit different and see a bit of the city. I’m definitely enjoying Melbourne so far and looking forward to playing at the famous MCG on Tuesday.”
