Tough test - Scott
Scott Parker knows you only have to look to the champions-elect of the Premier League to underline the quality of our Europa League opponents FC Basel.
The Swiss champions drew at Old Trafford and then beat Manchester United at St Jakob Park to knock United out of the Champions League at the group stage last season.
Top of the Swiss League, FC Basel are now showing the same form in the Europa League.
They started their European campaign in the Champions League in July, but lost a play-off against CFR Cluj. That meant a switch to the Europa League, they moved into the Round of 32 as group runners-up and have since toppled Dnipro and Zenit.
“People will look at the Swiss League and think it’s not one of the strongest but I remember Basel knocking out Manchester United in the group stages of the Champions League last season, so it will be tough and we’re under no illusions,” said Scott.
“They have quality players and they are a very good team. It’s a game we’re looking to go out and win, like any other game, but we understand it will be tough.
“We’re coming off a positive result at Swansea and we’re all looking forward to it.”
Scott stressed it was important ‘not to look too far ahead’ but knows a place in the final is drawing closer.
“The next game is always the most important, but we’re at the point now where we’re a couple of games away from the final,” he said. “We’re getting to the nitty-gritty stage of the season now.
“It would be massive to get to the final. Ask any player and those are the days you all want. It would really round off a good season if we could get there.”
