Two exceptionally quick individuals are the subjects of Opta's express head-to-head player preview of Tottenham Hotspur's mouth-watering clash with Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Both Simon Davies and Laurent Robert give their team much-needed pace and are likely to play a key role in deciding the outcome of this Premiership encounter.

Davies has really established himself at Tottenham this season after finding his opportunities limited during George Graham's reign. He has repaid the faith that Glenn Hoddle has shown in him and is in line for the Club's Young Player of the Year award.

The 22-year-old has grown in confidence this term and has performed superbly in a wing-back role that is not exactly his natural position. But he has still managed to get forward and notch three Premiership goals, in addition to the three strikes he has notched in Spurs' run to the Worthington Cup to be held in his native Wales.

In the long-term Hoddle sees Davies as a central midfielder, but he may have to improve his 73% passing accuracy which is somewhat below Dyer's completion rate of 84%.

The Newcastle midfielder missed the Magpies' hard-fought FA Cup success at Peterborough last Sunday, with Olivier Bernard taking his place. But Robert will be raring to get back into the thick of the action as the Toon Army look to keep up the pace at the Premiership's crowded summit.

Certainly the pacy Frenchman has the capacity to shake the Tottenham rearguard up. Robert has five assists to his name in the league and his steady supply from the left has been a feature of United's attacking play this season, complimenting perfectly the wing wizardry on the other side of the pitch from Nolberto Solano. Robert is an accomplished finisher too and with four strikes to his name also Spurs will be keen to prevent him from getting many shooting chances.

The former Paris St Germain flyer is second only to Craig Bellamy at the club when it comes to bursting forwards with the ball, having embarked on 155 dribbles and runs in the league. Davies may be forced to do as much defending with Robert flying down the left flank as he does attacking, in what promises to be an intriguing, ebb-and-flow battle between the pair.

If you think Robert can inspire the Magpies to a rare win in London in their last Premiership visit to the capital this season, surreySPORTS offer 7/4 on an away success to keep the team firmly in the championship race.
