Tottenham Hotspur Foundation in SA

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has recently returned from a successful trip to South Africa where they teamed up with the Club's international charity partner SOS Children's Villages.

Coaches from the Foundation visited the SOS Children's Village in Rustenburg where the Club has funded the construction of the Tottenham Hotspur House for orphaned children.

Representatives from the Foundation met with children and staff in the village and took the opportunity to learn about the community and the challenges some young children face in South Africa.

Community football coaches from the Foundation hosted the first ever football coaching session for the orphaned children since the opening of the village earlier this year.

Gary Broadhurst, Tottenham Hotspur Foundation Community Development Manager said: "This was a fantastic opportunity for the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation to work directly with the orphaned children in the SOS village in Rustenburg. Football is hugely popular in South Africa and it's a source of much enjoyment for the children in the village.

"Every child, foster mom and member of staff was incredibly enthusiastic and it's evident that the structure that SOS has in place, with the help and support from the Club, is having a huge impact on the lives of young children."

Brenda Dimbleby, SOS Children's Villages Communications Co-ordinator added her appreciation, saying: "The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation provided the children with the opportunity to showcase their football skills and I think they surprised some of the Spurs coaches with their abilities. The children love football and for them to be visited by representatives from a Premier League team was a very special occasion, especially for the children in the Tottenham Hotspur House."

In September this year Spurs legend Gary Mabbutt officially opened the SOS Children's Village where the Tottenham Hotspur House, uniquely and completely funded by monies received from players' fines, provides a home for orphans in the region.

The initial Tottenham Hotspur family currently consists of SOS foster mum Patricia and her 'adopted' sons Daniel (15) and his natural brother Lionel (13), Isaac (9), and Lesego (4).

The SOS Children's Village is situated in a suburb called Tlhabane West, a particularly needy area of Rustenburg, which forms part of the North West province that has a high number of orphaned and vulnerable children.

In 2007 the Club announced a four-year international charity partnership with SOS Children's Villages. SOS Children's Villages focuses on family-based, long-term care of children who can no longer grow up with their biological families. Many of the children are victims of war, poverty or natural disasters and are AIDS orphans, street children and sometimes even child soldiers.

We will keep you updated on the progress and developments of Tottenham Hotspur House and our family throughout the course of the season and let you know how you too can be involved.
