Anthony Gardner successfully came through a behind-closed-door reserve team outing at Spurs Lodge on Monday.
Our 20-year-old central defender has been a frustrated onlooker during the pre-season programme and opening games of the campaign after sustaining a serious knee injury in the final game of last season at home to Manchester United.
Ahead of that setback, Anthony impressed with a string of composed displays at the back as Glenn struggled to contend with a horrendous injury list.
Our recruit from Port Vale took the first steps on his playing comeback in a friendly against Gillingham and Colin Calderwood’s side recorded a 2-0 win with headed goals from Alton Thelwell and Ben Bowditch.
"I had a reserve game run-out — mainly for fitness — against Gillingham on Monday," said Anthony. "Everything went okay - I came out with no injuries or niggles.
"I played the full 90 minutes, I was planning on playing 45 at first, but my fitness was feeling okay and I wasn’t stiff so I carried on playing until the end."
Anthony says he felt little in the way of trepidation as he faced the prospect of testing his knee in the tackle.
"Not really no. Once I got back into it I was alright. In went into a few fifty-fifties and I came through them okay, the knee held out and that was pleasing.
"I’ve been back in full training for about three weeks now, we’ve got another reserve game next week so I’ll play in that and see where we go from there."
Anthony’s target now is to put himself back in Glenn’s thinking with an eye on returning to the first team picture after featuring so strongly at the end of last season.
"Hopefully I’ll get a couple of games under my belt and get back up to 100 per cent fitness and hopefully push myself towards a squad place.
"It (the injury) was a disappointment, but all I can do is come back from it and hopefully be stronger and play better and hopefully get in the team."
