Tommy Clay

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

TOMMY CLAY (1914-29)

One of the most accomplished full-backs of his era, Tommy Clay played over 450 games in total for us between 1914-1929.

He actually started his career at Leicester Fosse and impressed so much against Spurs in an FA Cup tie in 1914 that manager Peter McWilliam signed him there and then.

Strong in the tackle and intelligent on the ball, Clay played through the First World War and eventually won his first England cap against Wales at Highbury in March 1920.

As club skipper he led us to the 1920 Second Division title but handed the captaincy to Arthur Grimsdell and therefore missed out of lifting the FA Cup after out triumph in 1921.

Clay remained a fixture in the side until May 1929 when he moved to our nursery club Northfleet as player-coach.
Appearances/goals: 318/23 (Lg), 33/1 (FAC).
