Together we're stronger - Hugo

07 October 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris believes an ever-increasing team spirit in the dressing room will play just as big a part in our results this season as performances on the pitch.

Our French goalkeeper, whose leadership qualities and experience in the game ensure he wears the captain’s armband for both club and country, is a firm believer in the importance of a harmonious squad.

He insists that a togetherness off the pitch is a direct correlation to positive results in matches for any set of players and feels that our current squad are developing an understanding which will only help as the season progresses.

“It’s too easy to think that we come in, train and go home,” explained the 28-year-old, who previously played for Nice and Lyon before joining us in August, 2012. “It’s important to create something inside the training ground with your team-mates, to develop something positive for the future of the team.

“It’s easier to do that with your team-mates when you know them well, it gives you that extra power to fight for them. I believe in’s the human side in the team and that’s important.”

As skipper of the side, having taken over the role for the second half of last season and retaining it this term, Hugo feels a responsibility to help harness that togetherness, particularly as one of the more elder statesmen in what is a relatively young squad.

But he also says that, while he’s honoured to captain the club, it doesn’t change the way he goes about his footballing business.

“It’s always a pleasure to captain this team and this club. It’s a mark of respect from the club, the manager and my team-mates but it changes nothing from me, I’m the same person, always involved in the team and trying my best to help the team to win as many points as possible and to be decisive.

“We have a lot of young talented players in the squad but they will need experienced players around them to show them the right way.”
