Thurstable School CaRe project

In the early part of the year, 15 pupils across years seven, eight and nine were selected to participate in a new project in conjunction with Colchester United Community Sports Trust (CUCST) and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.

In the early part of the year, 15 pupils across years seven, eight and nine were selected to participate in a new project in conjunction with Colchester United Community Sports Trust (CUCST) and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.

The Community and Respect (CaRe) Project was designed so that young people do not just look at racism within sport but also at diversity within different cultures and backgrounds and how prejudice within society can be overcome through working together.

Five pupils were selected from each year group based on their academic and sporting achievements and attitude. The pupils that were selected had been highlighted for their ability to complete tasks independently in order to raise money for a selected charity.

These pupils worked together to organise fundraising events and create assemblies to raise awareness for the SOS Children's Foundation.

Throughout the fundraising day, pupils organised a non-uniform day and activities such as ‘Beat the Goalie' competition, a ‘Crossbar Challenge', a raffle and a coaching session that pupils could participate in run by coaches from the CUCST throughout lunchtimes.

For the activities the pupils had to create posters, organise the equipment that was required, and set prices for their activities so other pupils throughout the school would participate and raise money for the Foundation.

Overall the day was a great success with the pupils doing a great job in running the activities, raising a grand total of £938! The cheque was presented at Sunday's game with AS Roma at The Lane.
