'They text me the word 'Leverkusen', and then I worked it out' - Heung-Min Son
18 October 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
Heung-Min Son needed one word on text to know that he was heading back to Germany in the Champions League.
“It was just funny,” recalled the South Korean forward on hearing about the draw. “Kevin Wimmer text me straight away, so did my agent, all my friends.
“They just text me the word ‘Leverkusen!’ and I was wondering ‘why are they texting me ‘Leverkusen’?’ and then I worked it out! I thought ‘oh no!’.
“I will enjoy it there but you know, we have to win as well. It’s not all about enjoyment. I want to get three points.”

Sonny scored in both legs of the Champions League play-off against FC Copenhagen in 2014-15 on his way to 17 goals in 42 matches in all competitions. He followed up with goals against Benfica and Zenit in the Champions League and Leverkusen agonisingly went on to lose on penalties to Atletico Madrid in the last 16.

Sonny reflected: “Leverkusen are the first team I played in the Champions League with, I also scored my first Champions League goal for Leverkusen, so it will be nice to be at the BayArena again.
“Everyone is my friend there. I remember everyone and I’m thankful to Leverkusen. It’s a special game for me, playing Leverkusen in the Champions League.”
Friends, maybe. Lots of smiles, always. But there is a drive in Sonny to go and win this vital game in Group E.
“It’s true, for 90 minutes on the pitch, we’re not friends,” added Sonny, who scored the winner at CSKA in MD2. “We play for the three points and everyone has the same mindset.
“It will be difficult but we’re going for three points.”
Premier League Player of the Month for September, Sonny has hit a rich vein of form this season.
“I had a great time in Germany and I’m really happy to be here now, to play and to show how I can play. I’m happy.”
