Theory is paper thin
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Glenn Hoddle reflected on what, on paper, looks a chance to boost the points tally in December and insisted: "Football is not played on paper."
After playing what you would term the 'big five' of Manchester United, Arsenal, Leeds, Chelsea and Liverpool in our first 14 games we now face Bolton, Charlton, Fulham, Ipswich, Southampton and Villa in December.
Of those teams only Villa are currently above us in the table - and that could change by beating Bolton at the Lane tonight.
But Glenn pointed out: "The games you talk about 'on paper' are not easy games, there isn't an easy game in this league and Bolton going to Manchester United and winning proves that.
"It's a tough league and I think this season it's even tougher.
"It proves that because teams are beating teams left, right and centre.
"All I'll say is that if we perform have we have done in the last six weeks, if we maintain that and stay injury free, then we'll have a good chance of putting some results together, no more than that."
It was suggested to the boss that a positive sign was playing slightly below par and winning - as we did both at West Ham last weekend and Fulham on Thursday.
He added: "West Ham wasn't necessarily below par but we never got into top gear. We've played better and lost.
"But it's a great sign to hit the woodwork three times, win 1-0 and feel like you haven't come out of third gear.
"We've played well against the top five teams and it will be interesting to see the next batch against those teams, some at home, some away and see how we do result-wise, because performance-wise we played well.
"We just need to bridge the gap and get the results to go with the performances."
