The shape of things to come
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Glenn Hoddle offered an insight into his philosophy with regards to the shape of his ideal team. The crucial ingredient of the Hoddle-model is all about balance.
While everyone is aware of Glenn’s leaning towards flair players, he revealed the slightly more pragmatic side to his nature when he admitted that players with guile and craft must be coupled with those prepared to graft.
"In this day and age you have to have the right balance and shape," said Glenn. "And if you don’t, you are not going to achieve anything in the modern game.
"I’ve always said that is why Brazil went 20 years without winning the World Cup - because they didn’t change.
"When they did, when they put De Silva and Dunga in, they won the World Cup. They had to balance it off.
"They wanted to play like they did in the 1970s which was wonderful and any manager would love to put out teams like that. But the game changed and you have to have that balance.
"Manchester United have that balance of working hard as a defensive unit and the flair on the ball as well. Every modern team has that.
"Juventus, when they were at their height, Milan, Arsenal, Leeds, any
team across Europe, they are all built like that. It’s not just about flair and style, you have to have the balance."
