The Perryman Years 2
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Part two of our exclusive video special with Steve Perryman, where the former skipper reveals why he turned down the chance to leave a relegated side and join Liverpool.
Steve Perryman tasted the highs and lows in the 1970s.
The decade started with one of the great teams as the likes of Jennings, Peters, Chivers and England took the club to League Cup triumphs in 1971 and 1973, the UEFA Cup in 1972 and the UEFA Cup Final again in 1974.
“Those days were a blur, I just got taken along on the tidal wave,” he recalled. “You feel it is going to go on forever but, of course, it doesn’t.”
How right he was. Three seasons later, the side was relegated. “I remember a 5-0 defeat at Manchester City, coming home down the motorway and being passed by supporters who weren’t too friendly and quite right,” he said. “Those things stick in the mind.
“At that time I had the chance to leave the club and join Liverpool but I was captain of that relegated team, was partly responsible and I felt I should stick around and help turn things around.”
We did so at the first attempt and the glory, glory days were just around the corner again.
