The lowdown on Saints
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Southampton made significant strides on behalf of both the short and long term in the last seven days. First came the recruitment of a vastly experienced full-back, followed by the capture of the hottest young forward prospect to come out of Australia since Harry Kewell.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The defender in question is Dan Petrescu, deemed surplus to gritty requirements at Bradford, so Glenn Hoddle was quick to step in to provide a new home for the attack-minded Romanian. It is hard to figure out how Petrescu would not have aided Bradford’s cause, but it is to Southampton’s gain.
At the other end of the scale, Jay Lucas’ reward for reaching 16 was a move from Wollongong Wolves to the south coast.
The young striker was reportedly being tracked by the likes of Leeds, Liverpool and Middlesbrough, but chose the Saints.
Southampton's recruitment officer, Malcolm Elias, commented on the coup: “He is a very exciting young player, a natural. He's 6ft 3in and he scores goals for fun.
“He is coming to join us on July 1 and we have him at least until he is 19, hopefully longer. He has been a very hot property and we are delighted he has chosen us.”
By the time Lucas is ready to pull on his boots for the club, Southampton will have departed the Dell for a swish new arena in St Mary’s and, by on current form, it will be as a Premiership side.
Since seeing Spurs off by a 2-0 scoreline at the Dell just after Christmas, Southampton have played three, won one, drawn one and lost one — leaving them a semi-comfortable 14th in the Premiership table.
Derby were accounted for at the Dell in what was being described as a six-pointer between likely survivors, but three wins in a row proved unachievable.
They were somewhat unfortunate, however, to be undone in the final seconds at Liverpool by a Markus Babbel goal, having been denied a clear penalty at the other end shortly before.
Southampton then preserved their FA Cup status with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United before continuing Premiership hostilities against Charlton. The Londoners manned the barricades to good effect and left the south coast with a point.
So it’s a return to White Hart Lane for Glenn Hoddle — and he will be seeking an improvement on the last visit. He brought his Southampton side to the Lane in March 2000 and went home reeling from a 7-2 hiding.
Their main tormentors on the day, hat-trick man Steffen Iversen and two-goal Chris Armstong, will almost certainly not feature this time around . Over to you Les and Sergei.
By Richard Hubbard
