The lowdown on Everton
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
It was at the end of the 1997-98 season when the inhabitants of Liverpool’s Kop gleefully unfurled a banner bearing the words ‘Congratulations Secret Agent Johnson — Mission Accomplished’ in a cheeky reference to Everton’s relegation plight.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
As it happens, the gloating was a bit previous as Everton survived the drop, but it did intensify the pressure on chairman Peter Johnson. Word got out that the ex-Tranmere chairman was a former Liverpool season ticket holder and the hamper king was on a loser from then on in.
He suggested moving to a state-of-the-art stadium complex — cue the formation of ‘Goodison Forever’. Johnson, soft spot for Liverpool or not, was not going to be accepted. Bill Kenwright rode in on his blue and white charger and took over the club at the beginning of last season. He recently floated the idea of relocation to a new venue in the Kings Dock and gained overwhelming support. Just goes to show.
The link between then and now is that if Everton are not careful they will become embroiled in another relegation dog fight and having a blue-blooded man at the top counts for nothing in terms of points on the board.
Everton have recorded only six wins this campaign and have not registered a victory in their last six games. They currently lie just two points ahead of the drop zone and Middlesbrough are on the up under Terry Venables.
Walter Smith has had a crippling injury list to contend with, but then many a manager could point to that scenario. Smith might have more of a case, having lost his twin strike-force of Kevin Campbell and Francis Jeffers for a lengthy period — and they have yet to return.
Duncan Ferguson is finally back leading the Everton attack, but he is hardly a prolific scorer of goals. If reports are true then Ferguson could be joined in the line-up by Paul Gascoigne, whose form warranted mention of an England recall before a hernia problem laid him low in November.
Swedish international Niclas Alexandersson has also recently returned to the side and, with that sort of experience available to him, Smith should guide Everton out of their current troubled waters.
Prior to the six game winless streak, Everton won three games in a row, Arsenal and Chelsea were victims at Goodison along with a win at Bradford. In the fourth game of this campaign, Everton were on course for their first away win, two goals to the good at White Hart Lane. The match finished 3-2 and provided an early layer of Spurs’ home resilience.
As has been well documented, Spurs have struggled on their travels, but Everton are no great shakes on their own patch — losing four and drawing three out of ten.
Winning at Leyton Orient in the FA Cup bucked a trend and secured a passage, now lets make an away point — or three.
By Richard Hubbard
