Martin Jol looks back on Monday night's reverse up at Newcastle and ahead to the UEFA Cup visit of Getafe to the Lane on Thursday.ON MONDAY WE probably played our worst game since the beginning of the season after putting together a run that saw us unbeaten in six games, although it was a sequence which should have brought more wins given that we played better than the opposition.

We have scored 26 goals so far this season so our position is not down to our attacking quality, it is just that the goals we are conceding are avoidable. Our players are fighters and good characters and we will address this - we will do better because we have to.

Against Getafe we have a fantastic chance to get off the mark in our UEFA Cup campaign and we also have the Carling Cup again next week. In between we have Blackburn, which will not be easy as they are one of the teams who are playing particularly well at the moment, but we have to do it.

It is a case of having to grind out the results at this stage while leaving out the mistakes. I know we keep talking about mistakes each week, but it is not about confidence. We have got ourselves in a position and we have to get out of it.

We have done it in the past and it is a matter of trust, but the players have to do better and they know that. You have to do the right things and I know we have got very good players here to do just that and get us out of a position we shouldn't be in.

We need to be a solid team that keeps clean sheets and everybody is involved in that aim.

If we had won our first two matches then getting draws at Fulham, Bolton and Liverpool would probably have been satisfactory, but that is not the case. It is not just about winning a game and turning a corner, it is about cutting out errors through communication and teamwork. It is never about individuals.

Getafe will be a challenge, last season they played some of the best football in their domestic league along with Barcelona and hardly conceded any goals. This season it is different and, like us, they are conceding some cheap goals. Unlike us, however, they have had a bit of a problem scoring goals.

They remain a very good footballing team but, with us at home in front of our supporters, I am optimistic that we can get the result we want. We have an excellent record against overseas teams both in friendly games and in last season's UEFA Cup and I will be putting out my strongest possible team for this fixture.

Hopefully the outcome will provide a tonic for all concerned.
