The Jol Verdict

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

After pondering the performance against Middlesbrough, Martin Jol offers his considered verdict back at Spurs Lodge...

I DIDN'T REALLY have a night to reflect on Sunday's game because the Liverpool game is coming up on Wednesday and I was watching them.

I was happy, I was pleased - but only for five or ten minutes because we have to push on. One result is not enough, we can build on it and we played well in the second half, but we shouldn't forget that they played with ten men.

Playing against ten could have been difficult and I think we played well, the only thing I was not so pleased with were the chances we created that were not finished off. That was a shame but, on the other hand, when you get a victory under these circumstances the only thing you can be is happy.

We needed it, I was happy for the fans, for the club because you felt there was a little bit of tension and we could do with a win and we did that.

In the first ten minutes of the second half we did the same things we did in the first, but I wanted them to use the left flank more because Thimothee Atouba gave us a different option.

For the first ten we didn't do that but then we looked for the spare man all the time and you could see Middlesbrough had a problem with it. They still played with three in midfield and I was a bit anxious over whether they would play in a 4-4-1 formation. Maybe that would have been more difficult for us, but they didn't do that and it was good for us.

I was pleased with the way we went about it, you saw Reto Ziegler and he did well, Atouba wasn't 100 per cent fit after a knock and he also did well. I think the midfield overall played well, Pedro Mendes made a good contribution for the first goal, Michael Carrick did less in the first half as we were too rigid, while in the second you could see we have terrific midfield players.

It is about playing together and getting used to each other, talking to each other - there are so many things you can improve and we hope to do that in the near future.
