The Jol verdict
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Head Coach Martin Jol offers his assessment of our pre-season campaign and looks ahead to the challenge of Portsmouth in the Barclays Premiership on Saturday...
PRE-SEASON HAS been good. It is sometimes said - if you are superstitious - that if you win all the games you could have a bad start. Losing against Porto wouldn't have been so bad in terms of making sure we keep our feet on the ground, but I still prefer to have a win.
We played well in the first half and played some good football in the last 20 minutes. There were some positive things and Edgar Davids got a very good reception. All the new players played at White Hart Lane for the first time as Spurs players and I think everybody got a good impression of them.
Edgar's welcome was extra special, now he knows what the fans are like and all about Spurs. We've got a great crowd and they appreciate it when players like him make the decision to come. I think it is something to be proud of, but I also tell the boys that they should be proud to be Spurs players. That is the main thing, it is not about players, it is about this club.
I am very grateful, not many clubs can get a full-house for a friendly - hopefully we will have a lot more Saturday afternoons like this.
We are now getting ready for the first game of the season against Portsmouth and it is always difficult. It is five weeks since we started and we're doing well. We're building and we will go on and improve the fitness levels and our play. We start with an away game and it is always a tough game at Portsmouth. We are confident, but still have to work on minor things.
We will be on our game and hopefully we can do well because we could do with a very good start to the season. Everybody expects a lot and we have much to live up to.
Portsmouth now have Laurent Robert and he is somebody who can score out of nothing and is a set piece specialist. We are aware of it and he scored against my former club Den Haag the other day. I think he is a good player and they have some terrific midfield players. They are organised at the back and it won't be an easy one.
