The Jol Verdict
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Our regular early week reflection with Martin Jol as the Head Coach looks back at our opening day win at Portsmouth and the general state of play at Spurs Lodge...
I HAVE to say I was very happy with the result at Portsmouth. A couple of players were out so you always worry a bit and you know all teams are eager to start well because they realise how important a good start is.
So I was very happy with a 2-0 win and hopefully we can build on that because there are some tough games coming up. It was important we got a result and we did that with a professional job.
Overall, we are very satisfied. Some people outside the club are talking about us being dark horses and giving us extra pressure but even last season we had so many new players that I felt we did well.
We played some good stuff, especially at home, but last season we won five games away from home and this time we need to win seven or eight to be more consistent.
Last season we weren’t always consistent but then again, there wasn’t another team in the league who had so many new players. That was another positive about Portsmouth because we had new players again but Teemu Tainio played as if he had always been a Spurs player, Paul Stalteri came in and had only played one game for us but he did well. We have some terrific young players like Tom Huddlestone, who is getting better and better but unfortunately is injured at the moment, Aaron Lennon will be a crowd pleaser and has a big future ahead of him and we have Wayne Routledge as well, so everything is looking bright.
It was Paul and Teemu’s first games in the Premiership and I thought they coped very well. Teemu wanted to come to Spurs and Paul had six or seven clubs interested in him but he also wanted to come to Spurs. We were happy with Stephen Kelly but we wanted more competition for places and I think we’re getting there.
The spirit is good, we have some terrific players, some need more experience but that will come. All the ingredients are there.
