The Jol Verdict
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Back at Spurs Lodge and with a couple of days to reflect, Martin Jol gives his considered view of Saturday's defeat at Middlesbrough.
I HAVE mixed feelings looking back at Middlesbrough. When we play at home the crowd lift us, we play attacking football and we can break the opponents and score goals. But if you play away from home you can't play the same way.
If you look at our games at Newcastle, Everton, Manchester City, Blackburn, we tried to break teams on the counter, we defended well, we didn't give away space. If you are attack-minded at home, it doesn't mean you have play in the same style away from home. We have to learn from that.
I think we've done ever so well though this season. We've so many young players, we've had to change formation a couple of times and the injuries to the likes of Atouba, Naybet, Pamarot, Gardner, Browny and Mendes haven't helped. That's been a problem but we've still gelled well together and played some good stuff.
However, we lack experience and that was the case at Middlesbrough on Saturday. Everyone knew after two or three minutes that they would invite us to play, win the ball and then break on us with the counter attack and that's exactly what they did.
We were making the wrong decisions and that's what I mean when I talk about experience. We still have a lot of youngsters. We did well at the back but if you look back at the goal Michael Dawson is over the half-way line and that's something we have to learn from.
