The Jol verdict
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Back at Spurs Lodge, Martin Jol took a reflective look at Sunday's 1-0 win against Newcastle United in the Barclays Premiership.
I WAS very pleased with the first half against Newcastle on Sunday. We played some good football and did what we set out to do, change play all the time and try to attack them through Andy Reid, Stephen Kelly and Simon Davies.
Newcastle have an eye on Europe and the FA Cup but they still put out a very good team. They didn't rest Shearer or Robert, I thought they might. Perhaps they wanted to take the game to us but we played with a very high tempo, pressurised them and did that for the first 30 minutes, dropped off a bit, picked it up again and then dropped off again. Maybe we were scared to get the counter-attack against us but we could have killed them off.
We needed to score a second goal so it would have been all over and done with but we didn't and therefore put pressure on ourselves. They had one chance in the first half, Ameobi's header, and one in the second half after the mistake between Paul Robinson and Ledley King but I don't think Robbo had a save to make. At the other end we were a bit sloppy with our counter-attacks because we could have scored more. Overall, a 1-0 win and six points against Newcastle this season has to be very pleasing.
Simon Davies played well. I had to make a decision on Sean Davis because he did well when he came on against Birmingham but we knew Babayaro was playing and he likes to get forward, so if he wants to attack, we needed to play an attacking player against him We were very pleased with Simon. If you play over the flanks you need crosses, you can see that throughout the Premiership. Andy Reid is doing well, Simon is doing well and we shouldn't forget Stephen Kelly either, he's a young player and improving all the time.
