The Jol Verdict

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

With a night and a morning to take it in, Martin Jol managed to cut through the disappointment of our FA Cup exit and offered his considered view of Sunday's defeat to Newcastle at St James Park.

EVERYONE SAID WE we played well - including Graeme Souness - but it doesn't mean anything. We wanted to go to the semi-finals, the supporters wanted that and I felt it was an opportunity to do something.

I think after the first 15 or 20 minutes - where we looked nervous - we were the better team. If you are the better team, which we showed against Southampton as well, you should finish chances off. We had our opportunities and a couple of decisions went their way, which was a bit harsh on us.

Our crossing let us down a bit again, when you get to the area you should put in a good cross. The only one which worked well was Kanoute's where we should have scored, we could have scored twice in five seconds. One goal would have made me the happiest man in the world because we could have taken them back to White Hart Lane.

It wasn't to be and it is very disappointing. We played an attacking game, similar to a home game, as we were behind. Normally we try to attack, we had to change the side a bit, Noe Pamarot did well defensively, while Thimothee Atouba had a problem with Dyer who was a bit too quick for him the first 15 minutes. Other than that, I think we played well in midfield and created a couple of good chances.

We did play well and there has been an improvement. We got close to doing something in both the Carling Cup and FA Cup and we are doing okay but, on the other hand, if you want to make the next step I would rather do it now. All credit to the lads and to the supporters - who were fantastic again - but we should have done better in the cups.

We want to be one of the best teams in England and we need the results.
