Back at Spurs Lodge and preparing for Newcastle, Martin Jol gives his final, reflective views on the win against West Brom.

THE BALANCE of the team wasn’t right for the first half-hour against West Brom and that caused us problems.

It meant we couldn’t get the service to the right where we had Aaron Lennon, Jermaine Jenas and Stephen Kelly and we couldn’t utilise them. I think we created only one chance in that time.

After 30 minutes we changed it and I think Aaron showed us he’s someone who can penetrate and worry defences. We started to play and I think we did well for 60 minutes. The only thing is that we had to wait too long for our first goal and we were 1-0 down at the time.

We had to gamble and go for the three points because one point wouldn’t have meant a lot to us. If you look at the second half we took the initiative, put them under pressure and I was waiting for the goal.

We brought Mido on as well which was a bit adventurous but Robbie showed he’s a real team player on the right and scored his goals as well. Jermaine Jenas also played at right-back. On the other hand, they could have scored as well because they had plenty of space in midfield, but that’s a normal thing in those circumstances.

When we are 2-0 or 3-0 up, our opponents have that problem in midfield but we had it for 70 or 80 minutes as we chased the game.

We had 60 per cent of possession so I think we deserved to win. All credit to them, they fought hard and are a good side but they are at the bottom of the table and you could see when we put them under pressure they started to make mistakes and that’s what happened.

I thought all our forwards did well. Aaron looked a bit tired in the last 10, 15 minutes but he looked a threat. He’s done well in the last couple of weeks and has been productive. Jermain Defoe also did well because last week he chased down Melchiot for the first goal at Birmingham and he did the same against West Brom.

Sometimes it’s not all about scoring goals, it’s about playing for the team and creating something.

Our games always seem to be a big fight and this was the same story. I’m very proud of the lads, we came off with another good result and we’ve done that for the last 16 months at home.
