The Hughton View

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

IT WAS NEVER going to be an easy game against Birmingham City at St Andrews last week and there is always disappointment when you fail to hold on to a lead and take the three points.

I think in hindsight, when we reflected on the game, we were of the opinion that it was a good result in the end. It was away from home and a very difficult place to go and play.

The performance certainly wasn't one of our better ones and, to be perfectly honest, perhaps didn't warrant a win. Once we went in the lead though, I felt very strongly that we would go on and win the game.

It didn't work out that way and you have to give them credit. They were at home and had very passionate and wonderful crowd behind them that got them going. Birmingham play a certain way, they put us under pressure and never really let us settle and didn't allow us to get into our passing game.

You've got to give them credit and they will probably feel they had the better chances and possibly could have won the game. All in all, it was probably a fair result.

It was important for us not to get beaten and take something from the game after our recent dip. If you look at the table and the way it is panning out, a draw can be a good result.

We also need to start putting a run together and I think, where we've done well this season, is consistently being between fourth or fifth place and eighth or ninth. A run of three wins on the spin is one that can get you up from where we are to the higher bracket.

It has been mentioned to me that, in an ideal world, we would find the combination of last season's style and manner of performance and the results of early this season.

I think we're all after the perfect way of playing and the solution. There is one thing we're always going to do here and that's play the game in a certain way. We will look to pass the ball and be inventive and creative but there has got to be solid base.

That is where you start. Can you work off a solid base? There is nothing wrong with a 1-0 - you can be inventive and creative and still win by that scoreline. We are looking for that perfect blend.

We have had performances this season that are what we are looking for. We now need to provide everybody with that level of performance on a more regular basis.

West Brom are next at the Lane on Saturday and they come into the game on the back of a great result against Middlesbrough last week.

It is a home game for us and on paper we should win - but games are not won on paper. We've got to get back to the performance we had against Leeds. It was an excellent performance, particularly in the first half.

This will be a hard game because they are a very resilient side. If you look at their season, perhaps they have found it difficult, but they have not been beaten very heavily.

They've set their stall out to survive in a certain way and only come the end of the season will we find out if they've done enough to do that. I've got absolutely no doubt it will be a hard game for us.

I feel we will have a lot of possession, but they will have a lot of resilience and be hard to break down. Ideally you want to break them down early, then you feel the game will open up a little bit and there might be opportunities to go further ahead.

However, there could be the need for patience. If you said to me now, 'would you settle for winning 1-0 with a goal in the 80th minute?' I would say 'yes I would'.
