IT WAS UNDOUBTEDLY an important win for us against Birmingham last weekend to break the run of recent results.
If I look at the performance, it was good enough in areas without producing the amount of chances that we would have liked. We were fortunate at the other end, Horsfield had a reasonable chance early on and they certainly threatened us.
It was a welcome win though and, looking from now until the end of the season, I think we do realise that we've got to put some sort of run together to even think about qualifying for Europe. Hopefully this is the game that turns it for us.
Winless runs are very rarely broken with resounding victories, but Leeds proved to be the exception with a 6-1 triumph at the Valley on Saturday. At this stage of the season, if you look at Charlton and Leeds it was a little bit of a surprise result, I'd have to say.
Generally this season, apart from maybe a few teams in the middle, everybody is fighting for something. From where we are, we are fighting for that European place and teams like Leeds are fighting for the points to take them away early from the danger zone.
Not that there are any easy games anyway, but at this stage that fact becomes even more pronounced.
Securing a win clearly improves the general mood around of the training ground in the early part of the week but, I have to say, it always does. There is certainly a difference on a Monday after a Saturday win.
Of course, when you've gone on a four-game run without winning, it does lighten the mood even more. In particular, when we keep stressing the importance of a European place. One win pushes you back up to the threshold and shows light at the end of the tunnel.
Leeds are next for us at Elland Road and it has been an incredible season for them so far. What they are now is on the back of their best performance and win of the campaign.
That is something we've got to turn around because they weren't having the best of times before. We've got to make sure we're on top of our game as, irrespective of what's gone on, it's always a difficult game there anyway.
Anybody who goes there and wins has to work hard for it and I see no difference with us going there.
