The Greatest Assist

Ledley on his wonderful (inadvertent?) pass to Rafa for the second goal against QPR.

It's not often that Club captain Ledley King is lauded for his attacking prowess. Until now.

With the score at 1-0 in the 33rd minute of Sunday's clash with QPR, the centre-back found himself with the ball 30-yards from goal. Like all instinctive goalscorers, Ledley appeared to have one thing on his mind: glory.

Memories of his first strike for Tottenham - scored after ten seconds against Bradford in December of the 2000/2001 season, the quickest goal in Premier League history - stirred around White Hart Lane.

But just as it seemed as though he was about to shoot, the 31-year-old spotted Rafa Van der Vaart 16-yards or so from goal and cleverly disguised his through ball as an attempt on goal. The defender sliced his 'shot' towards the corner flag, set Rafa free in the box and the Dutchman did the rest.

This is what Ledley would have us all believe, anyway, as he spoke to Spurs TV Online after the game.

"I saw the net, I got a bit excited and err... saw Rafa there so I thought I'd slip him in. I fooled the defenders. Me and Rafa have been working on it so he knew what to expect. His first touch was great and it was a great finish."

One man who wasn't so convinced that the captain had provided one of the great Premier League assists was Gareth Bale, who would later score two goals himself.

Asked if he expected to see the net ripple as he watched Ledley prepare to unleash, the Welshman was unequivocal in his response.

"I was expecting row 'z' to ripple! His shot came off his big toe but he got a good assist."

So was the captain speaking with tongue firmly in cheek? Watch the clip above and decide for yourself.
