The goals had to come - Jan
Jan Vertonghen was convinced the goals would eventually come at Villa.
We dominated the first half but found ourselves goalless at the interval, despite a shot count of 11-1 in our favour and 15 corners!
Jermain Defoe grabbed the all-important first goal on 57 minutes and the goals flowed after that as Gareth Bale completed his first hat-trick in the Premier League for a 4-0 final scoreline.
The win moved us back up to fourth in the table.
“We had an amazing first half and dominated for 45 minutes but unfortunately, no goals,” reflected Jan.
“We knew the goals would come. We struggled a little for five minutes in the second half but after that we played well again. We just needed that first goal.
“We felt confident. Every player in our team can score and we knew if we continued to play our game, we would get there in the end.”
As for Gareth’s treble, Jan said he knew the net was going to bulge once he found himself in front of goal. “He was amazing,” said Jan.
“His left foot is lethal. There were good assists in there as well but you know if he’s in front of goal with his left foot it’s 80 per cent a goal.”
