The European buzz
Tom Carroll is excited about the opportunity of playing on another European night at White Hart Lane when we face Panathinaikos on Thursday night.
His Spurs debut came at the start of last season in Europa League action against Hearts and he featured in all three cup competitions last term, while he added to those this season when Andre Villas-Boas played him in the Capital One Cup ties against Carlisle United and Norwich City.
It’s been in the European competition where the majority of his game time has come, with starts against NK Maribor at the Lane and against Lazio in the Olympic Stadium on matchday five, where we picked up a valuable point in the goalless draw.
“It was a real buzz to play against a top European side in a great stadium in such a pressure game,” said Tom. “We knew we had to get something out of the game because the manager really wants us to go far in the Europa League this season.
“I felt I did ok on the night. I was disappointed not to get the assist for Gareth’s disallowed goal and I had to test myself defensively as well, because they had good possession and we had to work hard as a team.
“That’s not the strongest part of my game, I like being on the ball, so it was a challenge and I had to concentrate and do a job for the team. You know there will be games where you don’t see much of the ball and you just have to work hard, we did that out there and picked up an important point.
“Tonight we want to build on that, get the result that we need to qualify and hopefully win the game and see if we can top the group. These European nights at the Lane are really special, there’s such a fantastic atmosphere around the place and I’m sure there will be again tonight. Hopefully I’m involved and can play a part in getting us through to the next stage.”
