The Buchler Files 4

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

David responds to the question ‘will you go gracefully if things do not go according to plan?’ at the THFC Supporters' Trust meeting.

DB: I’ll tell you what - my wife will carry me out in a coffin if I don’t go gracefully. Having been here for three months, that’s a difficult question…

I am in a very, very privileged position. I think I’ve said this a number of times before — and I don’t say it lightly — somebody in my position, directors of the club, chairman of the club, are passing people in a club’s history.

I am a trustee of the club for its past, its present and its future and also for the fans.

I am not an owner, I have my 100 shares from whenever they were first issued, but I’m not an owner like Daniel, and Daniel got a slightly different balance. He has to balance shareholders’ interest, fans’ interests, club interests and all of those sort of things which are all important.

My responsibility, and I’m not an ENIC person, is that I’ve got football history and they wanted me to come in to do a review, to act in terms of running the club and try to get the club from a fairly difficult place into a more positive place.

So I have a journey to travel in relation to that. If I fail to act as in a trustee capacity, I do not deserve to be where I am, I’ll be quite honest with you. Anybody that takes advantage of this club and uses this club as a personal fiefdom — and I’d say the same in any other club — I think also has a very difficult position and should be thinking about where they’re going.

I think that’s important because I do think we are bit players, the club is far bigger than me, far bigger than any owner and this club will be here in a 100 years time when I’m buried under the earth.

I think this question of a trustee capacity is very important. When I was involved over the last decade in other football clubs and they had issues and problems that I was involved in sorting out.

Some of you know when Spurs had financial problems in the early nineties, I was bought in by the bank to try and sort out the problems at that stage. Then Barnet, God bless them, Millwall, Swindon, Oxford, Luton — all in different capacities.

In all of those, one of the real issues that resulted in them having problems was that they did not have the continuity, they did not have the real belief by the people at the top in the future, they only had belief in terms of how it affected them and their own positions.

It was a really difficult situation that a number of these clubs had.
