The Bill Nicholson Memorial Service
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
A memorial service for the great Bill Nicholson took place at White Hart Lane on Sunday morning and thousands turned out to celebrate the life of our most successful manager.
The service took place in front of the North Stand on Paxton Road and the congregation was welcomed by host Brian Alexander from BBC Radio Five Live and our pre-match Jumbotron presenter.
Footage providing memories of Bill's career were featured on the big screen before the introduction and opening prayer by Rev. Toni Smith of St Winifred's Church, Chigwell.
The hymn 'Abide with Me' was then played followed by a tribute to Bill by chairman Daniel Levy. There were also tributes from Cliff Jones, Jimmy Greaves, Martin Chivers, Steve Perryman, Glenn Hoddle and Gary Mabbutt, with further highlights from the Nicholson era illuminating the big screen.
All of our current first team squad and management were there to pay their respects.
The former players spoke fondly of the influence Bill had on their lives and careers, with a good few anecdotes thrown in. They recalled how he insisted on the game being played with style and how great respect was shown to all, from the youngest trainee to the club captain.
All Bill's family were in attendance and his daughter Linda spoke.
Following closing words from the Reverend, the Lord's prayer and the singing of Jerusalem, there was a final prayer and blessing before the release of 85 white doves to mark and honour each year of Bill's life.
