The Big Interview - Hugo Lloris
31 October 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
Ten games into the Premier League campaign and the ideal time to sit down with skipper Hugo Lloris whose message is 'so far, so good'.
What are your thoughts 10 games into the Premier League campaign?
Hugo Lloris: "We can see our improvement. We had a slow start in August and we were a bit frustrated because we weren’t rewarded for our performances. After that, we had a really good reaction in September and we were all delighted to see the gaffer rewarded with the Manager of the Month trophy."
We've only conceded eight goals - are happy are you with our defensive record?
Hugo: "It’s the basics of football. If we want to take the club to the next step, we need to be strong on our basics. I think we’re doing well because defensively, we’re not conceding a lot of chances and not conceding a lot of goals. It’s important to keep this mentality not just for three months but for the whole season and each competition. Offensively as well, after Bournemouth, we were all delighted to see Harry score three goals and for the confidence of the team it was important to score because we’ve created a lot of chances but not scored and that was a good balance before Villa."
Below: Hugo congratulates hat-trick man Harry Kane at Bournemouth last week
You were last off the pitch with Harry at Bournemouth, all smiling faces...
Hugo: "We talk about the situation. It’s not easy. He’s really professional, he works hard and creates a lot but he was not rewarded for his effort for the team. Sometimes when you don’t expect it you score a lot like at Bournemouth, where he scored a hat-trick. His confidence is back. He’s still young, we all know his potential and his importance for the team and the club and we want to see Harry with a smile."
You told us last season about the importance of a 'family' bond in the squad.
Hugo: "We have a lot of honest guys in the squad with a great mentality so it’s really easy to come into this team. It’s really positive. These players bring their skills but also their personality and mentality. I think it’s what the gaffer expects – a great atmosphere in the team, a great mentality, a working mentality and we need to be ready to win all together, to suffer all together, to learn from defeats together. It’s not just about one or two players, we’re a team and if we want to bring the club to the next step, this is the foundation."
What about your own form, Hugo?
Hugo: "The season is long and we want more. I want more from myself, I want more from my mates and I want more from the team in general. This is my mentality and the mentality of my team-mates. We can’t be satisfied with our start to the season after 10 games of the Premier League, we have to be satisfied at the end of the season and rewarded for our effort."
It's a big week ahead, starting with Villa, then Anderlecht and of course Arsenal next Sunday. What do you think about these fixtures?
Hugo: "Yes, we can say the next week is very important. We start against Villa, then we play Anderlecht and we finish the week against Arsenal, our derby. We’re preparing well and we all know the importance of this week, especially just before the international break, it’s always important to have a good feeling. Villa are struggling at the moment. They will expect a new coach soon so we just have to be focused on ourselves, on our performance. It’s a home game and it’s important to be respected at home in front of our fans."
