Thatcher talks continue

English Barclays Premiership

Talk are continuing between the club and the highly-rated left-back Ben Thatcher. They broke up without conclusion on Friday evening after Thatcher was at White Hart Lane to conclude medical tests and discuss the terms of his transfer with our management.

Director of football David Pleat issued a brief statement after Thatcher left to the effect that further talks would be needed before any deal could be reached.

And he told the Spurs official web-site at 7pm on Friday: "We have had some discussions this afternoon. There were many points to consider, not all financial, but we were not able to get a final decision."

He said the medical tests on Thatcher had been fine.

After Wimbledon accepted an offer in the region of L5m on Thursday, Pleat said: "We were determined to get an orthodox left-back. We hope... he will be wearing a Spurs training top on Monday and then travel to Sweden with the team.

"He is a potential England left-back and playing for our club can only help him in that direction."

Thatcher has made a huge impression since signing for Wimbledon from Millwall for L1.6m. Recruited by Joe Kinnear, the former Tottenham player described him as the next Stuart Pearce.
