Thanks, Azza!

Jermain Defoe paid tribute to Aaron Lennon after the pair combined again to secure victory against Panathinaikos on Thursday night.

Aaron provided another assist for the in-form striker to make it 3-1 against the Greek side as we progressed to the knockout stage of the Europa League.

The striker made a point of shaking the winger’s hand as he went off to a standing ovation after being substituted late in Thursday night’s win against Panathinaikos.

“Azza set me up again!” said Jermain, who now has 13 goals to his name this season.

“I said to him that he seems to have set me up every single goal! He’s been brilliant. We have a real understanding now when he drives inside, he doesn’t even look, I made the run (for the third goal) and he played me in.

“He’s been unbelievable, not just for me, but for the team.

“His workrate has been fantastic. He’s set-up a lot of my goals and sometimes I’m thinking ‘just shoot’, but he always looks for me. It’s great to play with someone like that. Thanks Azza!”

Jermain agreed that Panathinaikos - who needed to win to go through - provided a real test.

"In the first half they were really compact and made it difficult for us to get through the middle. It was important to score first, Ade did that, they came back but when Clint scored, we all felt we’d go on to win the game."
