Teddy's delight

Thu 09 May 2002, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Teddy Sheringham has expressed his delight after being named in England's World Cup squad this morning.

Our captain fantastic is in Sven Goran Eriksson's 23-man party for Japan and South Korea and will depart with the squad to start preparations in Dubai after Saturday's Premiership finale against Leicester City.

Speaking after training at Spurs Lodge this afternoon, Teddy beamed: "I'm delighted. There has been a lot of speculation for six months I suppose but it's really been hotting up for the last month and the last couple of weeks have been very nerve-wracking."

Had there been doubts in his mind? "There are always doubts," he admitted. "There was speculation that I would be going, speculation that I wouldn't and you don't like to build yourself up because in this game you get kicked in the teeth.

"It's nice that I've been mentioned all along and great that I'm involved."

What of England's chances? Teddy agreed that England find themselves in a tough group alongside Sweden, Argentina and Nigeria but is confident of the squad's ability.

He added: "If all the big players stay fit I think we'll have a very good chance.

"It's a very good team and squad and if we get the rub of the green at the right times we might have half a chance of doing well.

"I'm not going to say we're going to win it but we've got some very talented players and a chance of doing well. It's a tough group but if you get through the group stages, who knows from there?

"At this level you have to take your chance when you get it," added Teddy, who represented England in Euro 96 and at the 1998 World Cup.

"There are always ifs, buts and maybes but if you get a chance, you have to take it. That is what playing at the top of the tree is all about."
