Teddy Sheringham's programme notes v Southampton
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
First of all I’d like to say how nice it was to be back playing in front of the White Hart Lane faithful last week.
Your support was great once again and is appreciated by the players. As you know, we’ve had a new pitch laid during the summer and everything seems fine with it at the moment. We’ll have to wait and see if it’s as good as it looks now over Christmas, but early indications are promising.
It’s always good to be playing at home and it was great to get off to a good start with a win against Aston Villa thanks to Jamie Redknapp’s first league goal for the club.
He generally dictated the game here last Saturday and I think the class he has shown in pre-season and in our first few games of this campaign has proved to everyone what a great signing he is.
The Villa game was a little bit tight, they had a few chances to score but I thought our defence played very well and we were pleased to come away with a 1-0 win in what was a tough opener at home. It’s always important to win your first home game and that was no exception for us, especially after picking up a point at Everton the week before.
That victory then took us into the trip to The Valley on Tuesday in good spirit. We didn’t have long to recover after playing in the heat against Villa and we knew it was going to be a difficult game against Charlton, so the final result delighted us all.
In the corresponding fixture last year they battered us, they went 2-0 up early on and the game was effectively over. We tried to get back into the game but were always up against it, so we knew that this time we had to make a good start and we certainly did.
If I was doing the marking for the following morning’s papers, I would have given every player nine out of 10. It was a great performance, one of the most impressive displays I’ve been involved in for a difficult fixture such as it was.
Everybody was outstanding and to come away with a 1-0 win was excellent, plenty of teams will leave the Valley with nothing this season. We controlled the game, dictated play and Charlton never really got a look in.
If I started singling out players, I would mention one or two, but that would then become three or four and I’d end up praising the whole team because they all deserved it on the night. That’s the sort of performance we want on a regular basis.
Today’s game against Southampton is another big match for us and let’s hope we can continue our good start with your support.
