Teddy: Definite penalty
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Teddy Sheringham insists that it was a foul that led to the penalty that set us on our way to the 4-0 win at Tranmere on Tuesday night.
Teddy was felled by Rovers’ Mickey Mellon — who was later dismissed — and he picked himself up to score from the spot.
The home crowd were not happy, but Teddy says he harbours no guilt over the incident.
“I think it was a silly challenge from the defender and a definite penalty in my view,” explained Teddy. “I’ve got no conscience about that. I’m going nowhere as such and got a shove in the back and that took me over.
“The boys might think I’m having a dive but that’s not the case at all.”
Teddy feels that taking a relatively early lead and Mellon’s sending-off settled the boys for what, on paper, looked a difficult assignment.
“It could have been a tough game, but when you get in front and with the composure the players have got at the moment we’ve always felt we were going to win it.
“With the fella then getting sent off as well, that probably played into our hands. We played some good stuff after that and the second goal was the killer. We played well again in the second half and the goals came later.”
“It could have changed. They had a nice spell just before half-time when the crowd got behind them at set-pieces and we knew that would be difficult. If they got a goal then all of a sudden you can get jittery. But we held firm and the second and third goals killed them off.”
Teddy expressed sympathy for Tim Sherwood who, on his return from injury, was sent-off for two bookings 15 minutes after coming off the bench.
“It was a terrible sending off for Tim. He’s just fought his way back from injury, got himself back in shape and for him to come on, play 10, 15 minutes and get sent off for something like that is ludicrous. But that’s what’s happening in the game.
The fella barged me over, simple as that. I wasn’t looking for it, I wasn’t using my experience, I went to get the ball and he’s barged me over, simple as that.
