TED DITCHBURN

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our former goalkeeper Ted Ditchburn, who died yesterday.

He was an ever-present in the famous 'push and run' championship side of 1950-51 when he was seen to pioneer the art of starting attacks from the back with his pinpoint throws.

He arrived at the Lane from nursery club Northfleet in 1939 but only managed a handful of games during the war years, when he guested for Aberdeen.

But the end of the war signalled an amazing spell between April 1946 and March 1954 when Ditchburn missed just two games - including a record of 247 consecutive appearances.

He won six England caps and was a member of England's 1950 World Cup squad before being hit by injury and eventually leaving for Romford and later Brentwood Town.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
