Taricco welcomes Ben threat

English Barclays Premiership

Mauricio Taricco would welcome the arrival of Ben Thatcher to the club - even if it threatens his own position.

Director of football David Pleat confirmed on Sunday that we were on the trail of Wimbledon defender Thatcher, 24. If we are successful, Thatcher will pose a huge threat to Taricco's position as the current first-choice left-back.

But the Argentinian insisted: "We have to improve the squad at Tottenham. That's the way it is. You get injuries, suspensions and need a big squad to compete in the Premiership.

"To see the arrival of another left-back as a threat would be unprofessional. It would improve the squad and, at the end of the day, we all want Tottenham to be where it deserves to be - at the top."

Taricco, 27, established himself in the Premiership team last season and was left without real competition when Justin Edinburgh, his main rival for the spot, decided to move to Portsmouth. Once again though, Taricco takes nothing for granted.

"You can never assume you are the first-choice in any position at a club like Tottenham," he said. "If you take that position at yours, one day it will be taken away. To think that way at a club like this would be a mistake."

George Graham's first signing back in November 1998, Taricco is recovering from a double groin operation and hoping to be fit for the start of the season on August 19, when his former club Ipswich Town arrive at the Lane for an opening day cracker.
