Taricco on Veron

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Mauricio Taricco believes Manchester United have acquired a fine player in his countryman Juan Sebastian Veron, but is intrigued as to what position the £28m-man will fill in the champions’ line-up.

The costliest signing by far in British football will take his Premiership bow against Fulham on Sunday after securing his nation a World Cup spot by scoring the first goal in a 2-0 victory over Ecuador on Wednesday that makes Argentina the first South American country to qualify for the finals in Japan and South Korea.

But Veron is committed to a good nine months of tough Premiership duty before his mind wanders east and Taricco will be an interested observer.

"There’s no question about the talent he has got," said Mauricio. "In Argentina he is probably one of, if not the best player in the national team. I supposed some people would argue that, but obviously he is a top talented player.

"I don’t know how he’s going to fit into Manchester United. It is a big thing for them, but there are already a lot of good players there."

Mauricio’s reasoning is hard to question when you consider that Manchester United generally play a four-man midfield quartet consisting of David Beckham, Roy Keane, Nicky Butt or Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs - although Sir Alex Ferguson has publically pondered playing Scholes in an advanced role to accomodate his new recruit.

"Sometimes it is hard to see how they are going to play," added Taricco, who hints that Veron might just take a little time to fire on all cylinders.

"I don’t think he will take it (the Premiership) by storm, but I think he will fit in alright when he plays. It is just interesting to see how he is going to play and where he is going to play for Man Utd. It is another great player for them.

"I played against him when I was young in Argentina, he is two years younger but he was playing in my division. I don’t know him personally.

"He was doing great in his team, he went from Estudiantes de la Plata to Boca Juniors, which is a big club, and done alright. That is when his career took off really. It was a big step going to Boca — it is the biggest club with River Plate. When he did that all the other steps was a natural progression for him."
