Tano on Veron switch

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Amid all the hype surrounding Manchester United's capture of Argentina captain Juan Sebastian Veron two seasons ago - Mauricio Taricco was one to voice a note of caution.

Mauricio never cast doubt on the quality of player United spent some £28m on acquiring, it was just that he could not figure out how they were planning to best use his fellow countryman.

This is what he said, here on the official site, back in August 2001: "There’s no question about the talent he has got. In Argentina he is probably one of, if not the best player in the national team. I supposed some people would argue that, but obviously he is a top and very talented player.

"I don’t know how he’s going to fit into Manchester United though. It is a big thing for them, but there are already a lot of good players there."

Mauricio remembered the conversation this week ahead of our trip to Chelsea, where Veron is now plying his trade after not quite hitting the high points at Old Trafford.

"United had a great team already at the time and they were at their best when they played the same midfield as they had before.

"It was tough to work out where he was going to fit in there. He is a great player, but United had a settled midfield really and if they stayed fit - Keane, Scholes, Giggs and, at the time, Beckham - it worked fine for them.

"When a midfield is working fine, I feel you shouldn't really change it."

Mauricio does suspect, however, that Veron - given time - will prove to be a Premiership success in Claudio Ranieri's reconstructed Chelsea side.

"We will see, I don't know. To be honest, Chelsea is going through a big change and you don't know what what is going to happen. You suppose, because of the money they are investing, that they will do well.

"But it will be a matter of time before we can see how they all fit in. I think Veron is a good player though and should do well."
