TALKING WORLD CUP
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Director of football David Pleat kicks off his World Cup notes by setting the scene and reacting to the shock defeat of the champions to Senegal...
IT IS MY first visit to Asia and I am facinated by the massive progress that South Korea must have made following the troubles that resulted from the division of the country in the fifties.
South Korea is now a thriving business world with Seoul as American-like as one can find. There is huge security in place, but only friendly faces amid the thousands of office blocks and wide roads alongside the Hanang River.
At the present time I am in Pusan, which about 420km from the capital Seoul. This is a more traditional Asian region, very busy, there is a massive shipping industry and is from where they export Hyundai cars amongst other high tech products.
The football has been good and I have been fortunate to witness three games where there has been spectacle and goals.
Senegal's surprisingly clever stregegy won them the opening game against France and the Lens centre-forward Diouf won much acclaim.
They were a strong, athletic side who had much purpose and motivation in beating their friends from French football - the industry that employs most of them.
On another day Djorkaeff and Henry score rather than hit the woodwork and France's front players will score goals in the tournament. I expect them to win their next two games.
However, surprisingly for the first time, I detected a shortfall in midfield - believe it or not, Petit looked half a yard short and was 'nicked' to the ball on several occasions.
Vieira, who started well, appeared to fade late in the game. Maybe his wonderful efforts at club level have taken a lot out of him.
The opening cermony was vibrant and bouncy - and won much acclaim.
