Director of football David Pleat explains the thinking behind a couple of our young players moving out on loan switches last week...
TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY for the Football League clubs came and went fairly quietly with one or two of our players in demand.
We turned down the opportunity to let out our promising young midfielder Mark Yeates, who last weekend scored a hat-trick for the under-19s. His performance for the reserves at Charlton last week was also lively - two days before the deadline and this obviously attracted interest.
However, slightly older boys were given the opportunity of a loan move. The change of manager at Southend meant that Stephen Kelly was slightly up in the air and we decided that it was better for him to get another clutch of league games under his belt so that he can make a big challenge next season for senior status.
Fortunately for Stephen, QPR, challenging for promotion in the play-off places, wanted him and he played a very good game at Blackpool. Manager Ian Holloway was on the phone to say that he'd done very well and we're delighted.
This Saturday they play Cardiff - it couldn't be better for young Stephen.
Johnnie Jackson had the experience of playing against the other team he's been on loan with this season, featuring at left-back for Colchester against Swindon and coming out on top.
We watch these games and monitor the progress of our young players. The scouting report sent back from Colchester was better than average, which augurs well.
We also had a late call on Thursday for Ronnie Henry, who started the season very well and played one or two pre-season games at first team level. He has had fairly regular reserve team football and has also played for the under-19s.
Ronnie was in the squad for Southend at York City, but did not get on the pitch in what was a 2-0 defeat. I'm sure we will be popping down to Southend in the next few weeks to check on his progress.
