Talking Postiga

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Director of football David Pleat gives his take on the exciting capture of Portuguese international striker Helder Postiga.

ONE OF THE most important factors in a new player coming to a different country is their ability to settle well - and quickly.

This often depends on the temperament of the player, his mental strength and ensuring that he is coming into a friendly environment.

Helder Postiga will have every opportunity here. His career was destined for one of Europe's glamour leagues, like a lot of Portugal's very fine young players. In the last five to eight years Portuguese players have been held in very high esteem because of their success at youth level.

They look after their best young players from a very early age and keep the same group of players through each level and only add one or two each year. This is preferable to having a different crop all the time consisting of what I would call 'flavours of the month', which happens in this country.

I am vehemently against this and it makes under-21 caps so cheap. If a player played at that level last season he probably had to be playing first team football. If his circumstances change at the club and he is out of the team he might not be able to continue his England career.

The top players should be identified early and nurtured - Postiga comes into that category in his own country. He is surrounded by lots of very good young Portuguese players and has played at a club in a football fervent region, but one that needs to sell a player every couple of years to keep the recruitment drive going.

Postiga was a much sought after player - chased by many clubs. A lot of English clubs have seen this player and respect him. That is why we were delighted to wrest Postiga from his club and to Tottenham. He is a very mature man for his age and I think that will work in his favour.

The fact that he has played up front in an isolated role because of the system at Porto, where there is often one up the middle and two wide, he has had to learn to use his strength to hold the ball and use it well. He is very dangerous in an attacking sense down the right hand side going towards goal, he goes past people, has a good touch and a good feel for the ball.

He can only do well and I think that he is another one in our locker of very good young players at the club.

When he arrives for training he will be in good company and we will obviously spend much time helping him familiarise himself with his new surroundings.

Postiga comes here with a very, very good pedigree and, of course, has a good chance of being of regular in Portugal's very talented national team. There is no doubt about it, we had to play for quality and we have bought a quality young player.
