David Pleat gives his view on England's 1-1 draw with Sweden in their opening World Cup encounter.
ENGLAND FLATTERED, THEY started with enthusiasm and managed to ferry the ball across the field well in the first half, with Beckham bringing Mills into the game to some effect.
It was a good set piece and Campbell took his goal well, exposing the vulnerability of Hedman in the air.
In the second period Sweden adjusted and stopped the flow. I felt England were looking for too many searching balls too early, trying to play the ball forward into penetrating positions too soon.
They needed to be subtler and indulge in some setting up play before releasing the final ball.
Alas, our fears grew and Sweden appeared to take over the game with great heart and drive. I think it is fair to say that you could not deny them the draw.
Indeed, England's efforts in the second half, apart from a brief spell with Heskey in the centre, were slightly insipid.
