Swindon first for Spurs Ladies in 2016-17 FAWPL

11 July 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs Ladies will kick-off their 2016-17 FA Women's Premier League (FAWPL) campaign at home against newly-promoted Swindon Town on August 28.

It's an intriguing opener for the team as they bid to follow up their best-ever season last term.

Spurs reached three cup finals and landed the spoils in the Ryman Cup and the national FAWPL Cup - the greatest success in the club's 30-year history.

As they chased cup glory on four fronts, there was also a commendable sixth-placed finish in the FAWPL, but a finish manager Karen Hills is determined to improve on - with her sights set on going better than the club's best of fifth in 2014-15.

That starts against a Swindon team promoted as champions from FAWPL South-West having won 15 and lost just one of their 18 matches in 2015-16.

The teams met in January when Spurs stormed into a 4-0 lead by half-time on their way to a 4-1 win in the FA Cup.

"We can't wait to get started," said Karen. "The players have been back in training for a while and there is a hunger there to push on again after last season.

"Swindon is an interesting start for us. We'll get a picture of where they are after winning their title last season. We know from the FA Cup tie that they have some quality players and they will no doubt look to sign new players after being promoted.

"We're looking for consistency in the league this time around and we'll be looking to make a positive start."
