Summer sports sessions for disabled young people
31 July 2015|Tottenham Hotspur
This week Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has been supporting Northumberland Park Vale School with a disability sports programme to get more disabled young people and their siblings playing sport during the school holidays.
The sessions, delivered by the Foundation’s equalities and inclusion team, have seen young disabled people from the local community and their brothers and sisters invited to take part in a range of sports including football, cricket, wheelchair rugby, Boccia, bean bag co-ordination games, table tennis, polybat, mini athletics and wheelchair slalom races.
Bringing together disabled young people and their siblings helps to build relationships and encourage them to share experiences through sport. Running programmes like this also ensures that individuals can access sports provision outside of the school curriculum.
Davina Findley, who was one of 14 participants who took part in the summer programme, said: “I love playing sport with my sister Gabriella and my friends.”
Tony Millard, deputy head of Northumberland Park Vale School, said: “All the staff at the school thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s specialist disability sports coaches. Having disabled young people play sports alongside their able-bodied siblings is not only inclusive but also gives parents a real break. As everyone knows, brothers and sisters can be competitive and playing sport can be a healthy way to exercise this competitiveness.”
Peter Stone from Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s equalities and inclusion team, said: “It’s been great fun working with youngsters at the Vale school this week. Playing sport is a great way to keep active during the school holidays and can bring siblings closer together in a fun, safe environment within their local community.”
The Foundation has a longstanding relationship with Northumberland Park Vale School and continues to work with teaching staff to provide access to local sports clubs and physical activity groups for those living with disabilities in the community.
The next disability sports session takes place at Peter May Sports Centre in Waltham Forest from Monday, August 10 – Friday, August 21. For more information please email firstname.lastname@example.org
