Stoke v Spurs - Mauricio's press conference
08 September 2016|Tottenham Hotspur
We take a look at some of the things Mauricio Pochettino had to say during today’s (Thursday, September 8) press conference ahead of our trip to Stoke City on Saturday.
Can you use the experience of last season's 4-0 win at Stoke to the team's advantage this weekend?
Mauricio Pochettino: "Every game is different, now it's a different season and different players too. We arrive in a different moment of the competition and, for me, football is present, it's not what happened last season or yesterday and because of that it is very important to be focused."
Does the start of the Champions League group stage next week in any way influence your team selection at Stoke on Saturday?
Mauricio: "No because the most important game is Saturday against Stoke. We don’t change because on Wednesday we have another important game. At Tottenham we have a squad to compete in every competition and it’s important to keep the level."
What's your view on Harry Kane as he waits for his first goal of the season and do you think we’re going to see what happened last year repeat itself again?
Mauricio: "Yes, I’d sign up again for him to have the same season where he starts late to score and then scores 25 goals. He always needs to be calm, it’s always difficult when you come from the Euros and the expectation from him is massive – every ball he touches, we all wait for him to score goals. It’s difficult when you need to be fit and give your best. It’s about patience, time, hard work from him and I’m sure he will start to score again."
How much of a boost was it to see Christian Eriksen sign a new contract?
Mauricio: "I think it's important for him, for the club and for us to stop the rumours and be focused on playing football only. It's good for him, it's good for the club and we are all happy."
How is Hugo Lloris?
Mauricio: "He is good, the last week he trained very well and he is ready to be available for Saturday."
How do you see your attacking options with Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen in the squad?
Mauricio: "We have different alternatives. In first three games we always had one week to prepare for the game, sometimes we decided to play with Harry and Janssen, other times with Harry like against Everton and Liverpool. We know that on Saturday we start (a run of) seven games in 20 days. Until Christmas it’s a crazy schedule but I’m sure that we will play in different positions, with different names, we will rotate the squad. All players have the possibility to play and show their qualities."
