Steve's glory night

Steve Perryman knows a thing or two about putting AC Milan to the sword at White Hart Lane.

Steve Perryman knows a thing or two about putting AC Milan to the sword at White Hart Lane.

Our legendary former captain and record-appearance holder had one of the games of his life against the Italian giants in the UEFA Cup almost 40 years ago.

Milan were packed full of stars and were in a golden period including winning the European Cup in 1969.

But they hadn’t reckoned on a highly-rated 20-year-old at Spurs who was about to halt their European progress in 1972.

‘Stevie P’ struck two wonderful goals that famous night on April 5, 1972. Bill Nicholson’s men won 2-1 and went through to the final with a 1-1 draw at the San Siro, with Alan Mullery on target.

The lads then lifted the trophy with a 3-2 aggregate win over Wolves.

“It was ‘my game’, if you like,” reflected Steve, who made over 850 appearances for us in all competitions. “I’m a team person and I’ve had better moments as a team man, but I don’t think I’ve had a better match from a personal point of view.”

Steve reflects on that triumph over Milan in full in tonight’s official programme and is positive ahead of the Champions League last 16, second leg as we hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

“I think it’s cautious optimism,” added Steve, now Director of Football at Exeter City. “We should be optimistic because we’ve got a good team in decent form, led by a fantastic manager, and home advantage.

“If nothing outrageous happens, Tottenham are good enough to go through because of the talent they have.

“The scene is set for Tottenham to finish it off and you’d have to be pretty pessimistic to think that won’t happen.

“The form they’ve shown in the home games has been amazing. You can only look at the vibes. But if an AC Milan player has the game of his life, like I had that night, then who knows? You can never tell.

“The team is growing up. The performance in Milan was mature. They had a wayward performance in the first half against Inter Milan but then looked unbelievably good after that.

“Now we’re all looking for another of those famous nights.”
