Stevenage 0-2 Spurs XI - Ugo's verdict

Sat 01 August 2015, 20:05|Tottenham Hotspur

Ugo Ehiogu declared our Development Squad ‘on track’ for the start of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League after Saturday’s Spurs XI friendly win at Stevenage.

Nathan Oduwa and Shayon Harrison scored the goals against Teddy Sheringham’s League Two side at the Lamex Stadium.

The lads controlled the first half without creating too many clear-cut chances but we took an early lead with an exceptional goal out of nowhere from Oduwa, who burst past three defenders, beat a fourth and fired home. The winger was later stretchered off after a heavy tackle from ex-Spur Charlie Lee, but was able to return to watch the second half from the bench.

Stevenage came back into the game in the second half which saw chances aplenty at either end. With five minutes remaining, Harrison was upended and converted the penalty himself for the final 2-0 scoreline.

“It was a really pleasing performance,” said coach Ugo. “There were some stand-out individual displays and collectively, we dug in when we were under pressure for 20 minutes in the second half.

“In the first half we controlled the game, had a lot of the ball and dictated play but we weren’t quite as fluent in the final third and needed to take a few more risks.

“Stevenage changed it around in the second half, put an extra man in midfield, went to a diamond formation and caused us a few more problems.

“Cameron Carter-Vickers was a rock at the back, Connor Ogilvie’s performances are becoming more assertive, which I like and he’s making progress.

“We set Kyle Walker-Peters a task to get more challenges in and to be a more conventional full-back, he tried that and we’re pleased with him. Milos Veljkovic managed the game really well.

“We know we’ll have to be better and other teams will provide us with different challenges but on the whole, we’re very content. Everyone is on track.”

Our Barclays U21 Premier League campaign kicks-off against Everton on August 10.
